The "Ghetto Drive" This project was dubbed the "Ghetto Drive" by my co-workers. Essentially it is the guts of an Iomega external usb2/firewire hard drive that I took out of the original enclosure and put into a cardboard box. Why? Because the cooling fan in the original enclosure was dead, and I wanted an external hard drive, and didn't want to pay for a new one. Here's the drive opened. You can see the hard drive in place as well as the wiring for the fan. I used a processor fan I scavenged from an old computer. the drive is screwed in from the side through the cardboard. Detail shot of the electronics. The top two silver boxes are the fire wire ports, which are covered up because I needed the extra cardboard there for stability Here's the fan I used. this is a processor fan from a Intel Pentium 3 processor. It is kind of noisy, but is very effective I keeping the drive cool.
This is a side shot of the enclosure. I had to cut the side flap to allow for the connectors.
Close-up of the connectors. The firewire is cut off on the left. That small button in the middle is an on/off button.
